Monograph

Selank (5mg) — Research Peptide

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences as a synthetic analogue of tuftsin — a naturally occurring tetrapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with immunomodulatory properties. The additional Pro-Gly-Pro sequence was added to improve metabolic stability. Selank has been the subject of clinical research in Russia and Eastern Europe, with published studies investigating its anxiolytic and nootropic properties.

Mechanism of Action

Selank’s documented mechanisms of action are distinct from classical benzodiazepine anxiolytics, operating through modulation of GABA-A receptor activity without direct benzodiazepine site binding, and through influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression. Published research documents Selank’s ability to increase BDNF mRNA expression in the hippocampus of rodent models, a finding of interest in neuroplasticity and cognitive research.

Additionally, Selank exhibits enkephalin-stabilising properties — it inhibits the enzymatic degradation of endogenous enkephalins, prolonging their activity at opioid receptors. This mechanism may contribute to its documented anxiolytic-like effects in rodent models without the sedation associated with classical GABAergic agents.
